When I started to listen to Indie music Cathryn Beeks was the first artist I came across. My first thoughts were how come she’s not signed?? This earthy beauty has a way of wrapping herself around a song and making it hers. With a whisky-laced edge to her voice reminiscent of Joplin and Cher, Cathryn powerfully belts out song after song commanding you to listen, drawing you into her world. Her writing skills are exceptional; the songs are universally appealing and touch on everyday emotions. I have not come across a song yet that I don’t find totally outstanding. Now before you jump all over me and say….hey this ain’t country….broaden your definition. If you have to put her into a category let’s call it “Earthy folk funk” There, new category.
Cathryn began her exploration into music in 1989 when she joined the Antelope Valley Community Colleges commercial music program, Test Flight. She sang with a country/classic rock crossover band called “The Prairie Dudes”, did a stint singing on cruise ships and performing at weddings before heading for Cleveland in 1995. Here she formed a band called “Junk Queen” which lasted until 1998. 1999 found Cathryn opening a vintage clothing store. “Uncommon Thredz” performed another function, which was to feature and promote artists in the Cleveland area. Also in the same year Cathryn began to write with local folk singer/songwriter Heather Gmucs. Their collaboration gave birth to “great acoustic songs” and three months of touring across the U.S. Cathryn has also been named Cleveland’s Singer/Songwriter of the year for 1999.
Cathryn’s latest CD Coaster is a collaborative effort with the talented individuals in "JunkQueen" and "La La Land". Band members include from JunkQueen: Cathryn Beeks, vocals; Bruno D'Abramo, Bass; Sean Samson, Drums; Dennis Bielinski, guitar. From La La Land: Cathryn Beeks, vocals; Bruno D'Abramo, bass; Eric Brooke, guitar; Randy Shot, guitar; and Jimmy Elliot, drums. Coaster is an incredible musical accomplishment and should put Cathryn on the map artistically. This CD contains eight original compositions that run the gamut of emotions. Her vocal style on Coaster ranges from gutsy raw power to vulnerably sweet and seductive. If anyone deserves national recognition it’s Cathryn Beeks.
